CONCARGO AWARDED SISHEN SOUTH PROJECT 63 LOADS

Concargo in association with their Strategic Business Partners, has been commissioned by its client World Groupage Services to handle the transportation of a Bucket Wheel Reclaimer and two Ore Stackers in dismantled form from Saldanha Port to a mine in Postmasburg.

The total shipment weighs in at 840 Tons and measures 6200 cubic metres. A total of 63 trucks were loaded to transport the equipment of which 42 are Abnormal Out-of-Gauge loads, 4 of which are Superloads up to 9.54 metres wide, loaded onto a mix of 100 Ton Lowbeds, Step decks and Extendable trailers. The balance of the loads made up of Tri-axles and Superlinks truck tractor articulated vehicles.

The mining equipment arrived in Saldanha on 6th November 2009 from the Far East on a special charter vessel and is the biggest project shipment ever handled at Saldanha Port.

The despatching of the Abnormal loads is subject to the issuing of permits by the Department of Transport and Public Works and is being staggered in such a way as to keep the disruption to general traffic flows to a minimum. The availability of Provincial Traffic Escorts is also a factor we have to contend with. The safety of other road users always being the primary consideration. Route surveys and traffic accommodation plans have had to be carried out prior to the transportation of the larger loads and in the case of the Superloads, periodical closure of the roads will be necessary.

NEW ROUTES INTO AFRICA

Concargo, leading experts in Supply Chain Management activities, has recently added four new routes to its Over Border Road Freight service offering, namely Angola, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Of these the Angolan road service has proven to be a very popular alternative to sea freight for shippers given the lengthy berthing delays and port congestion problems currently being experienced in Luanda.

The destinations currently serviced in Angola are Lubango, Benguela, Lobito, Porto Amboim and Luanda. At this stage only full loads can be accommodated; both Flat deck, as well as containerized, using Tri-axles, Superlinks and Stepdecks. The trucks travel in convoy and are accompanied by a supervisor and diesel mechanic in an escort vehicle. Radio communication with the escort vehicle is maintained and clients can receive regular tracking reports.

The route from South Africa is via Namibia, entering through Nakop if travelling from Gauteng or KZN, and through Noordoewer if travelling from the Western Cape. Concargo has a Namibian Road Bond facility that allows them in-transit clearance through Namibia. They cross into Angola at the Oshikango - Santa Clara border crossing. Transit from Cape Town or Johannesburg takes approximately 14 days allowing four days for customs clearance into Angola.

MINING INDABA 2009

The Mining Indaba is the most important mining event in Africa and was held at the CTICC in Cape Town between 9 - 12 February. This was Concargo’s first year of attending the Mining Indaba.

This year, the Mining Indaba had a more focused vision. There were fewer sponsors and exhibitors this year due to the global recession that has forced the global stock markets to become increasingly volatile. These challenging times have impacted on the confidence of the Mining sector for future operations, however there were some positive comments as well. Anglo American’s South Africa head, Kuseni Dlamini, said that Africa has an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to the kick-starting of the down-turned global economy as it prepares for a revival of the commodities boom.

For Concargo this proved to be a very valuable opportunity to build relationships with their prospective clients as Concargo Abnormal Heavy Haulage Division were able to introduce their product into the market. Because Concargo Abnormal Heavy Haulage Division not only provides tri-axles, super links, Abnormal Heavy Transport and Mobile cranes to its clients, they also project manage the loads from cradle to grave.

CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR 2008

Synergy at your Service“ is one of Concargo’s trademarks and participating in the Cape Town Book Fair proved once again that we have an extraordinary and dedicated team willing to be of service.

The Book Fair took place over the long weekend between 13 – 17 June at the CTICC. This was a first for Concargo and we were one of 294 exhibitors at the Fair which was attended by 50484 people.

Our beautiful stand and our friendly staff members were well received although I’m sure handing out Lindt chocolates helped too.

The SAPICS conference is one of the best mediums to achieve this as it’s South Africa’s leading source of knowledge and expertise in supply chain management and operations including the management of materials, distribution and logistics.

1 291 people attended and 62 companies participated in the exhibition. Some of the comments received by visitors at Concargo’s stand were; “I didn’t know there’s an one-stop logistics company” and “I like your little mobile crane scale models. Can I take one home? … for my son of course.”

Our participation proved to be an excellent opportunity to network, build new relationships and promote our brand, value added services, expertise and service excellence.
